Michael Monsoor, hero

Tuesday, April 8th, 2008

Petty Officer Second Class Michael Monsoor joined the Navy before 9/11/01.  PO2 Monsoor joined the SEALs, the Navy’s elite special operations troops, in 2004 and completed his training in March 2005.

In April 2006, his unit deployed to Iraq.

Monsoor proved his bravery, selflessness, and heroism early on, when he rescued a wounded fellow SEAL from enemy fire.  He received the Silver Star for those actions.

In the subsequent months, Monsoor was involved in 35 other firefights with insurgents.  He was the SEAL communicator for his team, carrying the heavy radio used to call in support and such during firefights.

He also received the bronze star for his actions assisting the Iraqi military.

On September 29, 2006, Monsoor was part of a major clearing operation in Ramadi.  He was posted as a sniper when a grenade bounced off his chest and landed on his position.  Monsoor selflessly threw his body on the grenade, saving his teammates but not his own life.

Monsoor could have escaped, but sacrificed himself to save his comrades.  He didn’t die instantly, he hung on for 30 minutes.

Today, President Bush posthumously awarded him the Medal of Honor for his bravery.

A Disgusting Dose of “Liberalism” - California Style

Friday, March 7th, 2008

Well, so much for the liberals being all about “free choice” and “personal autonomy”……again, this judge reinforces the notion that liberals are only open to “free thought” so long as it is not in opposition to their own personal views.

The funny part is, these people claim to be “liberals” - yet how does denying a young individual the freedom of choice whether to join the military or not fit into the “liberal” notion where they claim to be all about free choice?

Check out this disgrace to the judicial branch. She didn’t agree with the Iraq war and “didn’t want” this young man “over there.” Hmmm…….too bad that’s not her call. Oh, and too bad she thought it WAS her call.

Following on my colleague’s theme below, here is a video from CNN about the Tomb Guards at Arlington National Cemetery.

Should we compell military service?

Thursday, October 25th, 2007

This is the type of article that gets nominees in trouble. This is the type of article that parents, students, liberals, girlfriends and politicians will go no where near. It raises the type of question you don’t want asked in time of war.

Should we bring back compulsory military service?

Why on earth would I ask that question?

Simple. We’re at a point in history where laziness is rewarded. Really. Indigent kids drop out of school and join gangs. Rich kids graduate high school and spend 4, 5, 6 or 9 years in college “fratting” out and then get a cushy job in daddy’s company. Not to say that there aren’t young people out there who do bust their necks in high school and college, and later become a contributing member of society, but they’re a dying breed.

To not make this drawn out and pointless, I’ll get to the gist of it. My proposal is this: Every person between the ages of 18 and 21 will be required to spend two years active duty in either the Army, Navy, Marine Corps, Air Force, Coast Guard or National Public Health Corps. They will have the option of going before college as enlisted personnel, or after college as an officer. For those with an aversion to Military service, they will be required to spend two years after college teaching in a Public School, full time.

What effect will this have? Ideally, it would ensure that virtually an entire generation of people are trained in marketable skills. Not all military personnel are fighters, there are electricians, mechanics, engineers, medics, clerks, bookkeepers, communication specialists, photographers, reporters, chaplains, law clerks, and others. If they opt to not enter the military until after college, they will serve with their generation as officers and leaders, also gaining marketable skills that most employers salivate over. Finally, I don’t think I need to explain the benefit of having a throng of trained, young public school teachers enter the workforce.

This proposal, while provocative, and maybe even initially repugnant, is, I think, sound. It would require a generation that has been spoiled by the media into being lazy (a generation that, sadly, includes me) to get off their butts, stop bitching, and get something done. Chances are, it might even reduce crime, increase the high school graduation rate, and possibly even create an incentive for kids who otherwise wouldn’t try to get a better education.

This is probably not a solution, but its a good place to start looking.

Evidently, Congress knows some things no one else does

With renewed confidence after the whole Gonzales debacle last week, Congress once again pushes to get someone else to say what they want to hear. After interrogating Gonzales, guilty of nothing more than having a public relations team so bad that it couldn’t make Mother Teresa look good, they now turn their proverbial sights to the Pentagon, to ask questions about the tragic death of Pat Tillman in Afghanistan (back when the democrats still liked war) and the rescue of PFC Jessica Lynch in Iraq.

The situation is this, the Army thought there may have been a predator drone flying overhead. They looked to see if this was true and found nothing. The hope was to get video evidence and clear up a friendly fire accident. Again, they found nothing.

Congress now seems to think that the Army doesn’t know what its talking about and is SURE there was a drone there, and that the military is hiding it. Now, after however many admissions of responsibility, why would the Army hide this video? It can either prove them right and show that Tillman’s death was a result of a screw up, or prove them wrong and prove it was the Taliban.

Now as for Jessica Lynch, I don’t know what they are getting at. There is a tape of the whole rescue, and this evidently has more to do with Lynch’s portrayal as a “Rambo” than anything else. For the record, Lynch was on a gurney the whole time, and the most she did was hold a “thumbs up” sign.

So, off to watch this hearing, and see what exactly Congress thinks they know that the Army doesn’t.

Don’t flatter yourself, Mahmoud

Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has decided to “pardon” the 15 British Marines who “trespassed” into Iranian waters.

Last I checked, you had to commit a crime to recieve a “pardon” for a crime. Had these been American Sailors and Marines, I am sure we’d be hearing from the “blame America first” left, about how we’re being unreasonable, and violating the “sovereignty” of Iran.

For the record, let me state that Iran has never provided evidence that these sailors did in fact violate anyone’s territorial waters.

Well, that rant aside, the good news is that the sailors are free, and Iran can go back to being the pain in the neck it usually is.

A beautiful story…
