The Second Amendment: Year in Review

Saturday, December 29th, 2007

Here are some of the top stories mentioned in the NRA-ILA Grassroots Alert in 2007. Notably absent is the successful drive to stop Anti-gun Pennsylvania Governor Ed Rendell from severely infringing Pennsylvanians’ right to bear arms.

JANUARY:

  • The U.S. Senate passes an amendment to S.A. 3, the “Legislative Transparency and Accountability Act”, removing an onerous proposal that would have drastically limited the First Amendment rights of Americans in the political process. Offered by Sens. Robert Bennett (R-Utah) and Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.), the amendment removed language that would have forced ordinary citizens to register with the federal government as “lobbyists,” with all the attendant restrictions, costs, and penalties
  • U.S. Senator John Thune (R-S.D) introduces S. 388-the Senate version of H.R. 226, a national Right-to-Carry reciprocity bill that would provide national reciprocity for state carry licensees by allowing any person with a valid carry permit or license issued by a state to carry a concealed firearm in any other state if they meet certain criteria. The bill would not create a federal licensing system; it would simply require the states to recognize each other’s carry permits, just as they recognize drivers’ licenses.

FEBRUARY:

  • Judge Carl J. Barbier, presiding over the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Louisiana, grants NRA’s motion for contempt against New Orleans Mayor Ray Nagin and police chief Warren Riley for “failure to provide initial disclosures and to compel answers to discovery” during NRA’s lawsuit against the City for its illegal gun confiscation of law-abiding citizens following Hurricane Katrina in 2005. Huckabee and Foreign Policy

Friday, December 28th, 2007

CNN reports that the Huckster is confused about foreign policy.

Here’s a question for Mike:

Chad is:

a) A guy
b) A Country
c) Both

Author’s note:  I accidentally published this post without linking to the CNN article.  I apologize.

No longer ad supported

Law School Conservative is doing away with the annoying ads on the page.  Simply put, they were irrelevant, and in my opinion an eyesore. Therefore, they are gone.

Dick Cheney: Huckabee’s hunter safety instructor

Friday, December 28th, 2007

Mr. Huckabee enjoys putting reporters in peril while hunting.

There’s not enough I can say about this…how on earth does he (and the group of hunters he was with, for that matter) think that its a good idea to fire a volley anywhere near the general direction of a group of people?

The irony of the whole thing is that before he went out, he took a swipe at Dick Cheney.  When asked why Cheney wasn’t invited, Huckabee answered “Because I want to live all the way through this.”

So, on top of not really being conservative, he’s also a bad hunter…and a hypocrite.

Great…

Coulter on Huckabee: Right On.

Friday, December 28th, 2007

I have one criticism of Ann Coulter. It’s that after reading her articles, you never know how she really feels on a subject. OK, that’s not true at all.

Nonetheless, her analysis of Huckabee is right on and can be found here.

As I said in my previous post on December 18th, Huckabee is no conservative. He gets a free pass by conservatives because he is a Christian (like myself), and a free pass from the media because he is about as conservative as a McGovern or anyone still alive in the Kennedy family. Also, the media loves him because he is what they want Christians to be: goofy white guys from the South who like to kill stuff and not think too hard.

Anyway, read Ann’s article and you’ll get the point. I hope my fellow Christians wake up. As Martin Luther said, “I would rather be governed by a competent Turk (Muslim) than an incompetent German.” I would not go that far at all, but it says something about the importance of competent leadership. Christian faith and values are important characterstics in leaders. However, just because someone (Huckabee) is a Christian does not mean he is fit to govern a nation.

Anyone who hopes the Republicans can produce a candidate as qualified as Jimmy Carter, and who will likely do as stellar a job, by all means please support Huckabee. I thought we conservatives were smarter than that…

The NRA sticks it to Ray Nagin

Thursday, December 27th, 2007

In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, the city of New Orleans sat in chaos.  In a misguided attempt to “safeguard the public safety” the mayor and the chief of police sent the police force out to confiscate all firearms in the city.  This clear violation of the second amendment, and the right of the citizens of New Orleans to defend themselves from looters in the chaos, however, did not go unnoticed.

The NRA and the Second Amendment Foundation sued in Federal Court.  A Judge entered rule for the City of New Orleans to show cause why the firearms should not be returned.  Turns out, New Orleans had no legal basis for their decision and the court ordered the firearms returned.

New Orleans was found in contempt, and a trial was ordered to determine damages.

Now, the NRA is seeking out all the affected gun owners to include them in the trial.

Stick it to em’ boys!
